Flip-Flop Safety Tips
Ready to ditch your shoes and socks for a pair of flip-flops? When summer temperatures soar, many of us reach into our closets for a pair of sandals to keep our feet cool.
In an effort to promote good foot health, the American Podiatric Medical Association recommends the following flip-flop guidelines for those who choose to wear them:
- Inspect your flip-flops regularly. Make sure to replace them when they show signs of wear.
- Select high quality, soft leather flip-flops to reduce the chance of getting blisters or some type of irritation.
- Make sure the flip-flop bends at the ball of the foot. It should not fold in half.
- Choose other supportive footwear for walking long distances, playing sports or doing yard work. Flip-flops offer little shock absorption and arch support.
Looking for a more supportive sandal? The APMS offers a list of footwear that meets specific criteria for their Seal of Approval.
