Bunion Splints
Last night at the Bon Secours for Women “Bones, Moans & Groans” seminar, a few attendees asked for a brief post on bunion splints to go up on our blog. Well- ask and you shall receive!
For those of you who did not attend the March orthopaedic seminar, a bunion splint is a device that helps to align your toes and thereby relieve pain and pressure due to bunions. By aligning the big toe into a proper position this splint prevent it from protruding onto the next toe and offers some pain relief. (Those with poor circulation or Diabetes should not use them.)
This FootSmart Toe Alignment Splint (pictured left) works in the following manner:
“A soft elasticized cotton band fits securely around the foot behind the metatarsal heads. The user slips the thin straps over problem toes and adjusts the tension by moving the hook-and-loop strap. The special T-strap helps reduce bunion pain by slipping over the big toe and hooking to the back.”
A bunion splint can help you deal with discomfort and pain, but it is not a permanent solution. If your bunion becomes increasingly painful or makes walking difficult you should consult with your physician about other treatment options.
