Treating Hip Arthritis with Physical Therapy
One of the first physical signs people notice as they grow older is that one or both of their hips may start to ache.
Although hip arthritis can cause significant pain, it does not always lead to surgery if it’s discovered in the early stages, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The AAOS recommends the following nonsurgical treatments for hip arthritis:
- Give your hip or hips plenty of time to heal from an injury.
- Use physical therapy, such as aqua exercise, to strengthen your joints and improve your range of motion.
- Ask your physician if a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug could help ease your pain.
- Lose weight. Excess pounds can make arthritis pain worse.
- Get enough sleep every night.
